Reviews: Something Wicked
Something Wicked This Way Comes Volume 1 is an erotic anthology that offers stories that span a wide range of romance subgenres and themes. The stories are very sexually explicit, as in wicked naughty, so if you prefer the love scenes incorporated into your romance reading to be sweet or light in nature, this anthology may not be your cup of tea.
Here are highlights:
In the science-fiction erotic fantasy Captain of Nara's Heart by Laurann Dohner, trader Nara Barns and her shuttle crew have been arrested for illegal trade on a distant planet. Nara is a human who left Earth and became a professional trader after being jilted by her ex-husband. Nara's shuttle has been impounded, and she and her crew are to be sold as a sex slaves to the highest alien bidder. The prospect is not only terrifying but repugnant to Nara for a number of reasons.
Nara is approached by a scout for Captain Cathian Vellar, who is a Tryleskian (a feline alien race). Because of a miscalculation, Cathian has gone into heat far from his home planet, and he needs female hormones to stave off madness until females arrive from his planet. Nara is left with little choice but to agree to go with Cathian's scout in exchange for a significant lessening of her sentence and the return of her vessel.
The method Cathian uses to satisfy his need for female hormonal nourishment is, um, interesting. As the days go on, Nara becomes quite infatuated with Cathian and becomes an enthusiastic participant during the intimacy required to stave off his hunger and madness. Cathian has beautiful feline eyes but is otherwise humanoid in appearance.
I think this story can best be described as campy, and while I did like heroine Nara, I had trouble buying into the choices she makes at the end of the story. The author did employ vivid descriptions and was successful in creating an interesting fantasy world. A word of warning: There is bondage incorporated into the love scenes, particularly during the story's conclusion.
Dragon Heat by Mel Tesho is a paranormal romance about Grace Macintosh who is a top agent with the Paranormal Detection Agency. Grace is sent on a mission to apprehend Benson Marres, a billionaire recluse, suspected of being a rare dragon shifter (a Kezmak). Benson is a known womanizer, and Grace poses as a high-class prostitute to gain access to his penthouse.
I quite liked Tesho's characterization of Grace and Benson. The former is haunted by a troubled past, and the later is the last of his kind, struggling to survive. As it turns out, Benson knows what Grace is up to, having orchestrated her involvement in the mission. These two are inexorably drawn together by an instinctual need to mate. You see, unknown to Grace, she is a rare Kezmak breeder, and Benson needs her if there is any hope for the survival of his species.
Tesho weaves an intriguing subplot of manipulation and betrayal into this short story, which I felt was extremely well-crafted. Grace and Benson must flee for their lives from a skilled, highly trained enemy who is bent on their capture for nefarious purposes. Readers can expect plenty of action sequences, a very seductive dragon shifter and hot love scenes.
Erotica author Desiree Holt's contribution to the anthology, Dangerous Addiction, is a contemporary BDSM-themed story. I have a fairly low threshold of tolerance for BDSM-themed stories. But thanks to Holt's skillful storytelling, Dangerous Addiction worked for me.
At 40 years old, Cord Jamieson has worked hard and amassed enough capital to enable him to purchase a failing Texas ranch. Cord is revitalizing it for personal use and as an entrepreneurial venture. In Cord, Holt develops a man who is comfortable in his own skin, a strong alpha male dominant who has embraced a BDSM lifestyle for years. He has enjoyed the company of numerous female submissive companions but never been in a committed relationship. Cord hires Fallon Crowe to handle promotion for his ranch and recognizes her as a natural submissive from the moment they met.
The moment he'd been introduced to Fallon Crowe, the instant they shook hands, the electricity of the connection shocked him. He couldn't remember the last time a woman had hit him that hard, if ever. He saw the effect reflected in her eyes, too — and in the way she quickly removed her hand from his.
The awareness was still front and center — as well as that intangible something, that undeniable feeling when like recognized like.
Fallon is a confident career woman who enjoyed being the submissive in BDSM relationships for 15 years before things went horribly wrong. Fallon endured nightmarish abuse at the hands of her previous partner. As a consequence, she hasn't been able to trust enough to become involved with anyone since a friend rescued her from relationship horror. Fallon is frightened and terribly unhappy in her personal life. She is understandably skittish about becoming involved with a "dom" again, despite a deep-seated need to feed what she sees as an addiction to the lifestyle.
In a few short pages Holt crafts a moving relationship-driven tale of a woman's journey to emotional wellness and renewed faith in herself with the support of a compassionate, complex man who understands her need to be dominated in an intimate setting. There are graphic scenes depicting this couple's unconventional lovemaking. Dangerous Addiction proved to be a memorable story.
And The Addiction by Jaid Black, my favorite in the anthology, is a contemporary erotic romance about world-weary Jack McKenna who has built an empire from his highly successful Hotel Atlantis Resort, which in essence is a high-class brothel. Jack is at the crossroads of his life. Depression is nipping at his heels, he suffers from insomnia, and he has very low self-esteem. He's tired and feels dead inside. I empathized with Jack and could feel his sense of hopelessness. Then he walks into a club called Venus Rising and comes across the absolute worst stripper in the world, and something remarkable happens: She makes him laugh.
Shelli Rodgers is a Ph.D. candidate in anthropology in the final three months of her studies. She has been working part time as a stripper at Venus Rising, which is owned by her friend Lynette. Shelli is close to being fired because of her incompetence. Like a lethal weapon on stilettos, she falls on stage, has no rhythm and gets herself into hilarious scrapes. The only reason she is desperate to keep the job is because the money is good, she can work part-time hours and earn a full-time wage. The night Jack walks into the club is Shelli's last performance as she makes one blunder after another. The thin ice she is walking on shatters, and Lynette fires her.
Using coercion, and thanks to a little luck, Jack tracks Shelli down at her family home in a small town. A spontaneous attraction morphs into much more. Jaid Black's stellar characterizations of Shelli and Jack and their special romance tugged at my heartstrings, making The Addiction a memorable story.

Actually, a gorgeous hunk of alien with the promise of two more who will join him. A virus has killed all of the males and most of the females on Earth. An alien civilization was also decimated by the same virus but only the men survived on that planet. Dar, Ezra and Maddox are the only surviving royals from their world. They have found their mate in Lillian. However, just as they bond, Lillian's returning memories may destroy their love before it truly begins.
This story is one sexy romp from start to finish. The plot is a bit far-fetched but you really don't care as the sex scenes burn up the pages. It's easy to submerse yourself in the sensual aura. Each of the three men approaches Lillian differently. The author is really writing three different love stories and that makes for very interesting reading. I thought the story ended rather abruptly and I would really like to know what happens next. I sure would welcome another story or two based in this world. If you're looking for something erotic and steamy, then I suggest you give this one a try.

At the start of Moon Thrall, I didn’t like Elyse’s character. She was weak, and way too cautious, but after reading more, all that faded away. Anyone would have acted the way Elyse had if they had been trapped under Caleb Marsden, Elyse’s ex-fiancé, for the past five years.
Once Elyse changes into a werewolf for the first time, and meets Dane, there is no slowing this book down. I was amazed by Elyse’s transition, how she gave herself over to her animal instincts emotionally, physically, mentally, and sexually. Moon Thrall is a fun ride through the Australian Outback you will not soon forget.

I never expected to get so much enjoyment
out of a short story, but this one was great. I had a fun romp in Australia
with Elyse and Dane. Elyse leaves behind an abusive
relationship by escaping to a rustic cabin in the wilds of Australia. Once there she makes a journey of
self-discovery, love, and inner strength.
Dane has waited for her his whole life. Elyse comes to him with a passion and love that he never thought he would find. During her journey of self-discovery, Elyse becomes his perfect mate in every way.
Elyse Wellston is on the eve of discovering she is a werewolf, her life has been filled with turmoil with a viscous ex-fiancé that she fled from only to find herself hiding in a remote cabin in Australia. Dane Maddox has been watching Elyse as her body is struggling to make the transformation, he knows she is his weren, his mate, his future; he only has to convince her of that before it is too late.
Moon Thrall is a quick read that has a unique spin on shifter stories. I thought the way Elyse, unbeknownst to herself, seeks her weren mate and finds him even though they have never met. A tantalizing read. 3.5 stars

Elyse Wellston has finally escaped from her abusive, brutal fiancé. She is on edge and fearful because she knows he is coming for her. Tucked away in a small cabin in the remote Australian Outback, Elyse knows only that she feels safer now.
Cautiously watching from a short distance, Dane Maddox sees Elyse step from the cabin and stretch. Finally! His mate has found her way to him.
Elyse has no idea what is happening to her as she succumbs to horrible pain and feels her bones breaking before she blessedly passes out. She awakes to find a stranger by her side. However, she finds contentment in his presence and an unquenchable lust. Unfortunately, Caleb Marsden, Elyse’s ex-fiancé, has already found her and will exact his revenge.
I admit, I love stories set in Australia. Add a paranormal element, and I am a fan. This novella kept me rapidly reading from the first page to the last sentence. It flows smoothly while being fast-paced. Caleb, particularly, stood out for me. He is a character I loved to hate. This book is the first I have read by this author and I look forward to reading more. Ms. Teshco seems to have a knack for stringing just the right words together so that an indelible image is seared into the mind of the reader - a wonderful gift.

After
escaping an ex-fiancé from hell, Elyse thinks she's going crazy when her body
starts doing unexplainable and painful things. She doesn't know of the beast
dwelling within waiting to break-free, but the tall, dark, and handsome
stranger knows exactly what to do and who she is.
The action gets going right from the beginning and continues throughout in the
form of either painful shifting, sizzling sex, or fighting the villain. The
story has such great potential for more world building, so I was a bit disappointed.
There seemed to be holes throughout the storyline that would've benefited had
there been more depth since it felt as though this book were part of a series.
However, I was riveted by the plot and the characters. The scene descriptions
are very well done and provides easy imagery. The story may be short on length,
but doesn't lack in enjoyment.
Any paranormal romance reader will devour this short fated love story and will
absolutely be on the look-out for more from Ms. Teshco.

Bitten by Books
Carnal Moon was an exceptional novella.
With a lot of paranormal romance, it is not uncommon for me to figure out the
path of the plot early and go with the flow until the end, and this book was
really no different. I expected the outcome to some extent and was not
surprised by the ending of the book. What made this novella different was the
characters themselves as they, especially Holly, revealed their turmoil over
what was happening in their lives and their inability to do anything about it.
Carnal Moon was sexy, appetizing and decadent — a
quick read that will leave you with a feel-good vibe to get you through your

Fantastic! World building in a short story that lacked nothing. From the pheromones to the shift, to the hunt, you’ll experience werewolf life as Holly does. You’ll be invested and swept into Mel’s incredibly erotic shifter world. Attention to the smallest detail made this story complete in a way most quickies aren’t. Without giving away any spoilers, I wasn’t surprised by the ending. In fact, it ended just as I hoped it would and the predictability didn’t detract from my enjoyment. To repeat myself because it was just so hot, sexy and satisfying. This story is fantastic.

Paranormal erotic romance (werewolf)
Holly Whyte could not deny the call that each
full moon brought as she needed to find a mate. Spending each month with a
different lover had never been a problem before… until she fell for Richy
Mandela. Too bad that he was a human lover and not a wolf-mate, because
betraying him every full moon by cheating on him was going to break her heart.
Ricky Mandela knew that his lover was keeping a
secret from him, but there was something about her that told him he had finally
found the one person he could share his whole life with. He just had to find a
way to prove to Holly that she could trust him with whatever secrets she was
hiding. For a lawyer he had some tricks up his sleeve that Holly would never
expect, and he would prove beyond a doubt that he was the right man for her in
every way.
Holly had been living with Ricky for three of the best weeks in her life. She could not help but say yes when he wanted to move into her Sydney home with her. If only she could find a way to break her lycan compulsion, she could look forward to a happy life with the man she loved. Instead, as the full moon approached, she knew that her time with her perfect human lover was going to come to an end. Succumbing to her nature, Holly found a place to let her wolf shift and await what she knew would come — a male to feed her carnal lycan desires. The large wolf with the silver-grey eyes gave her wolf what she needed, but left her torn when he took off before she could even see his face. This wolf had come closer than any other to fulfilling everything her wolf demanded in a perfect mate but her heart still belonged to the human man waiting for her at home.
Coming in at the break of dawn, Holly knew that Ricky might suspect the worst of her, and unfortunately there was nothing but truth in that supposition, but his sudden, carnal taking of her when she got home stirred up more emotional turmoil than ever before. How could she ever tell him the truth and how could she ever be true to him if she had to follow the call of the moon every month? When the next night the same wolf tracked her down and not only gave her his kill but ignited a passion within her once again, Holly knew that things were about to change in her life, but she never expected that her secret would bring about such a life-changing path.

Review: HockeyVamp, 4 Tombstones
Every full moon, werewolves can't resist the calling that drives them to find another werewolf to mate. Holly is a werewolf who's always been satisfied living as a human and escaping for some uninhibited and wild sex with a different werewolf every month... until she fell for her very hot and very human lover, Ricky Mandela. At a crossroads, Holly knows she can't have happily ever after with Ricky, not when she has to cheat on him with different men once a month. But she can't give him up either, not when he's everything her human side has ever wanted. Can she stand to lie and cheat on Ricky in order to hold on to the man she loves?
I really enjoyed reading Carnal Moon. This book has really strong and detailed scenes and amazing characterization, which is impressive given how the whole story is in Holly's point of view. I really liked Ricky's character, and though I was a bit skeptical at his reasons for not telling Holly his secret, I really enjoyed seeing his kind and understanding side paired with his hot alpha behavior. The plot is a very interesting and unique view on werewolves since the story is not just about a werewolf who is torn over not being able to have a human live with her human lover, but also about Holly feeling incredibly guilty and ashamed of her werewolf needs; needs that are impossible for her to control. One thing that could be improved is how to mask Ricky's secret better throughout the story, so that the ending is more credible and satisfying. For instance, I figured it out pretty quickly, and the fact that Holly didn't is kind of hard to believe. Moreover, the clock of the story is a bit off. The pacing is good, but towards the end it took me a while to understand that weeks and months had gone by instead of mere days, and that left me a bit confused as to what exactly was happening. Still, this story is pretty good, sweet and emotional, and I recommend it as a quick read to all paranormal romance fans.

Book Binge
This is a story that really hangs on Celeste's deeply buried self-hatred of her "disability" as she sees it: her gargoyle wings. Like her father, she is hunted by those who would make her a science project, capture and restrain her, poke, examine, and study her and essentially take away any future she could hope for. In all of this she is willing to have just one taste of loving and intimacy. It is also a study in human nature not unlike many who live in our world today, putting up icy walls to keep away curiosity seekers or anyone who inspire fear in them, even while desiring to know the fulfillment of close human relationship.
I found both Pascal and Celeste to be fascinating characters. Both were trying to live as humans in a world that hated anyone who is different. Even Celeste's parents--her human mother and her gargoyle father--had been forced to live secretly to protect any semblance of normal life. This hiding behind walls is not an unknown phenomenon and so many who find their love relationships falling apart could easily trace that break-down to the deep-seated fear of sharing themnselves fully with another person. Experience, unfortunately, has often taught people that being open and honest about oneself is an invitation to heartbreak at the hands of unscrupulous emotional predators. Celeste was determined not to be such a person.
I wasn't sure I would like this story but as I persevered in the reading I found that I became engaged in the story and saw the deeper themes that were present. I know this is erotic romance, but it is a story about living beings that are complicated, thinking, emotional and feeling creatures. As such they are of interest to me and aside from being entertaining, this novella certainly had some deeper worth. It is not a complicated plot, but I think it has merit as an entertaining literary piece and is worth a readers time and effort. Fantasy lovers and those who like paranormal romance with find this to be a nice way to spend some time. I would give this novella a higher rating except it is way too short. I would have liked for the plot, characters, their relationships and the basic conflict to have been expanded.

I liked the bit if mystique in this story as well. Things didn't quite progress as I expected and it was refreshing. I liked that Kallie wanted to be her own person and had struggles, such as the battle with the credit card. I could totally relate because there are lots of times when you want to shop and that plastic is darned alluring, but reality won't let you. It was a nice touch. But, I had a hard time liking her because I felt she came across as very selfish when she didn't get things to go her way. I liked how she grew through the story, but I wanted to see the transformation a bit earlier.
Seth, though the favorite character of mine, wasn't a martyr. He had his own issues. He wanted to make her happy, even if it meant his own demise. I had to give him credit for being so selfless, but there were times when I wanted him to strengthen his backbone and give her the what-for. Still, I felt his love for her and understood why he acted as he did.
If you want a story with red-hot love scenes and some smokin' hot F/F scenes, then you need to read Kallie Revealed.

One thing that does get my goat (this doesn't happen often, so look out!) is when I read reviews of short stories at places like goodreads, and the reviewer says something like, "I liked the storyline, but felt the relationship between the main characters should have been explored more."
Ah, no. In fifteen thousand words, you probably don't have time. You want drawn-out, read WAR AND PEACE.
I love Bites for precisely what they are - short action-packed, emotion fuelled reads that are like a ghost train ride - you begin, entering a completely different world, and a short time later you emerge out the other side into the sunlight, your heart pounding, your clothes slightly rumpled, but feeling much better for your visit to unreality.
HER DARK LORD delivers.
I was wondering how it would shape up after reading STONE-COLD LOVER, and Mel does beautifully. Right from the first fresh-out-of-the-silk-sheet-encased-bed scene to the hero's final bombshell, it's a great read.

Guarding Loretta was his biggest challenge and fear for Loretta became his Achilles' heel. For Loretta, the unhappiness that plaqueg most of her life after the death of her mom was heart wrenching. Falling for Cray was a testament of not only her true love, but it showed true maturity.
The sexual heat between this couple is truly arousing and heart warming. Are Cray and Loretta true mates? Will this incredible couple find true happiness in this incredible and exciting story from author Mel Teshco? Read it and find out.

Night Time Romance Reviews
To the world around her, Loretta Shaw is a spoiled little princess. She doesn’t let anyone in. Just about every night is a different man. Yet she can’t have the one man she truly cares for… Cray.
Cray isn’t your normal human man. Long ago, he was cursed and now he lives his immortal life as a gargoyle. He's currently Loretta’s guardian. No one but Loretta and her father know of Cray’s identity. He longs for Loretta but he knows if he does it will be hell once more.
Mel Tescho, author of Stone Cold Lover will have readers salivating over the sexual heat Cray and Loretta create. I can only imagine the writing skills Mel has can only get better from here on out. Stone Cold Lover is one fast spaced romance with just the perfect amount of suspenseful action scenes. The only warning I can give readers is that please read this in a cold a/c room. Stone Cold Lover’s, Cray will speed up the heartbeats and leave many breathless.I give Stone Cold Lover a rating of 5 Stars.

Stone-Cold Lover is one melting-hot read. Loretta is tenacious and Cray is the perfect tortured soul for her to heal with her love. This novella has enough fast-paced action to keep you turning pages and plenty ofunexpected twists and turns to keep the story from becoming typical. Now for the story --
Loretta tempts Cray to break his vow to protect her but not to have sex with her. She’s been promiscuous, trying to find someone to fill the ache and need and she knows only Cray can. Damn him for his determined will and honorable intentions. He’d learned a valuable lesson and paid a high price with his curse.
At night he awakens from his stone form and glides through the night to return Loretta to the safely of her home where he stands as a guardian gargoyle. He usually finds her in bed with another man. Loretta has deep secrets and scars of her own. All of this was wonderfully written (actually brilliantly written. The author knows how to string words together in a sensual way. I was breathless) and when Cray finally succumbs to his desires for Loretta, the connection is magical. The writing is flawless and carries you away into this delicious fantasy. However, the story failed for me at the end. Loretta is a slut. She knows it. Cray knows it. Not the problem. Her growth from slut to woman in love with her destined mate is great. However, I think she’s the next candidate for a trip to the Maury show. I don’t want to spoil the story, and I don’t think it’s that big of a secret. I just didn’t like the conclusion. Cray must be trusting that her lovers always wore condoms. And even condoms aren’t a 100% effective against pregnancy. The timing of the pregnancy is questionable and I would have preferred not have that element as it distracted from the story for me.
